Radio 90.5 FM’s Annual Easter Kite Flying Competition

Since 1999 Radio 90.5 FM has hosted the national kite competition at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain.

This event has become the largest event for the station, attracting thousands of people from every religious, ethnic and social group.  The idea was born from CL Communications’ Sales & Marketing Director, Ms. Kiran Maharaj.  Kiran was looking for a signature event for The People’s Station, an event that would extend beyond the boundaries of the station’s East Indian format and reach their higher goal of promoting family values and developing our children to ensure a sound future.

She looked at the dying art of kite building and flying and decided that was the way to go.  Not only would 90.5 revive the art, but they would be bringing families together as a unit and as a nation.  Over 10,000 people flock to the Queens Park Savannah every Easter Sunday since then to participate and spectate.  The competition has even drawn nationals from neighbouring islands in recent years.

The Easter Kite Flying Competition is truly a long lasting national event, and to date has achieved all that we set out to.
